That evening, Evan returned home bringing another surprise. “Christel, what do you think about selling this place and buying a house together? I mean, I have my house and you have this one. We could put both on the market and get something bigger, a little more grand.”

Christel stood at the kitchen sink, turned and looked at him like he’d grown two heads. “We are both busy professionals and never home. Why would we need a bigger place?”

A tiny smile nipped at the corners of his mouth. “For the family we’re going to have?”

Shocked, Christel shut off the faucet and dried her hands. “Family? We haven’t really talked about that.” Of course, they hadn’t talked about any of those things. He’d surprised her and they’d impulsively jumped into marriage. Not that she regretted her decision, not even a little. And yes, she did want children. It’s just something they would need to plan for. Someday.

She explained that to Evan.

His response was simple, “Babe, I know I’m springing this on you. There’s no reason to wait, really. I’d like to start sooner, than later.”

Christel’s heart pounded. “Oh.”

He cocked his head. “Want to expound on that a little? Is that something you would like to think about also?” He watched her with an anxious expression.

“Well, yes…I just don’t know about the timing. Right now, I’m in the middle of the golf course renovation. I had no idea the hoops a company has to jump through from an ecological standpoint. Every modification to the layout, the soil structure, the foliage and trees…it all has to be preapproved by Maui Environmental Management. The paperwork alone has me buried.”

Evan came around the island and took her damp hands in his. “There will never be a perfect time. My surgeries, my full-time practice, the medical boards I sit on….and your full plate—well, I simply doubt any of that will ever change. At least not significantly. And I don’t want it to. I love our busy lives. I love that we both enjoy our professional lives and that others benefit from our work. But, honey…I really hope you’ll consider what I’m saying.”

Christel thought a moment. She’d always wanted a family. In fact, as Jay’s addiction grew, the air in her mommy balloon had deflated. She’d simply been forced into the realization that getting pregnant was completely off the table. Then came the divorce.

While Evan didn’t say so, neither of them were getting any younger.

Christel looked him directly in the eyes. “How many children do you want?” Funny, how she wore his wedding ring and yet they’d never even discussed future plans for a family.

“I’m open,” he conceded. “At least two? Maybe three?”

She nodded. “Yes, we can’t possibly rob our child of siblings.” Another realization hit. If they were to have three children, she would indeed have to start soon. Lots of women have babies after forty these days, but it was still safer for both mother and child if the pregnancy happened earlier, which meant she didn’t have a lot of time.
